Nine Sites I Like and Why

4 01 2008

I just had a few minutes where I didn’t know what to do, in other words I had some time to kill. Usually what I do in such cases I just open up my web browser and go to one of my usual sites that I like to kill time at. But then I thought why not do something different and tell you about the sites I like.

9. Sudoku Puzzles
I do sudoku when I’m bored but don’t have too much time to waste. Or when I need to do something but don’t want to do it right away, I solve a puzzle then get to the task at hand. Thanks go to Marlow who pointed me to this particular site. This site is updated daily, has 4 different levels of difficulty for each day and has an archive of puzzles.

8. HowStuffWorks
Have you ever seen something that you thought was cool, or even something ordinary, but had no idea how it is done or works? HowStuffWorks has most answers to such questions. Even I dont know how everything works, that’s why I use this site. :)

7. Facebook
I admit, I too am somewhat addicted to Facebook (although, less now than before). I like to keep in touch with my friends, and Facebook is one of the ways to do it. Especially with friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time.
Oh yea, and birthdays! I like to think that I remeber most people’s birthdays, but alas it is not the case. Actually I don’t just go on Facebook and see who’s birthday it is today, tomorrow or in two days. Sometimes I don’t even login to the site for a few days, so it doesn’t help all the time. Instead at the begining of each month I copy everyone’s birthdays for that month to my Google Calendar, which then sends me text messages with reminders.
And there are many other reasons to use Facebook, and I’m sure they are the same as yours.

6. Gizmodo
I love technology, and shiny new toys that it brings. Guys at Gizmodo also love technology so much, it’s unnatural. I blame this site for making me go to eBay and spend my money there.

5. YouTube/Break/etc.
Do I need to explain myself here? :-P

4. Friends’ Blogs
Okay, this is not just one site, it’s a whole bunch of sites (see Blogroll). I am not the only one who didn’t update my blog in a very long time, I still check what my friends have to say. I find that people used to have more to say a year ago than they do now.

3. Wikipedia
What the hell is <insert whatever you want here>? Fast and easy answers and facts. Definitely one of my favourite sites.

2. BBC News
I go to this site at least three times a day, especially when stuff is happening somewhere. Local news just don’t cut it for me. I care what’s going on in the whole world. As a matter of fact (pronounced Azamat er of fact ;)) I don’t even read local news sites at all, I find out what’s going on in Canada from this world news site.

1. Digg
This site is not my homepage, but I cannot count the number of times in a day I visit Digg. This site has covers most of stuff other sites in my list have; news, comedy, educational info. I learn many things on Digg before it hits mass media.

Why only 9 sites? Two reasons: I think Top 10 lists are over rated, and I couldn’t think of a tenth site :).

What do you think about this list? Any of these sites on your top list? Anything else you can recommend?
